Connecting Formats to Audiences

Vom 04. bis 05. Mai 2023 organisieren die europäische Weiterbildungsinitiative Documentary Campus und das DOK.fest München in Kooperation mit dem Bayerischen Rundfunk unter dem Motto „It's a Match! Connecting Formats to Audiences“ (zu Deutsch etwa: „Treffer! Formate ans richtige Publikum bringen“) eine neue internationale Konferenz.

Im Zentrum der Konferenz stehen die folgenden Fragen: Wie entwickeln wir Dokumentarfilme, die ein breites (TV-) Publikum finden? Und wie klappt es, dass sich Zuschauer*innen aus der riesigen Fülle an Möglichkeiten ausgerechnet für einen Dokumentarfilm entscheiden? Welche neuen Technologien und Distributionswege stehen Sendern und Kreativschaffenden zur Verfügung?

Basierend auf den aktuellsten Ergebnissen europaweiter Publikumsforschung analysieren wir zunächst die Zahlen und Fakten zu den Vorlieben des Publikums und überlegen uns dazu passend Strategien, die wir anschließend in die Praxis umsetzen, indem wir ein Toolkit für Sender und Programmer*innen konzipieren.

Neue Technologien werden selbstverständlich miteinbezogen, um neue Perspektiven zu gewinnen. Wir diskutieren die Relevanz von (Online-) Bibliotheken sowohl für bestehende Sender als auch für beginnende Filmemacher*innen und wie sich diese besser nutzen lassen können. Wir wollen Monetarisierungsstrategien für Kreativschaffende analysieren und beraten, wie ein sinnvoller Umgang mit Vertriebs- und Verwertungsrechten in einer sich ständig verändernden Medienlandschaft aussehen kann.

14.30–17.00 Interactive session: Beyond Business: Meaningful D&I to Reach (New) Audiences
As documentaries gain popularity, diverse content is crucial to reaching new audiences, and ensuring meaningful inclusion on and off-screen is essential amidst the current climate of performative inclusion. This informal, guided discussion format will bring together creatives, producers, and distributors to discuss challenges and solutions for achieving meaningful inclusion from their respective perspectives.

9.00–10.00 Panel: Is daring creativity in the way to a great audience success?
A constant struggle in film: commercial viability vs artistic integrity. Documentaries seem to be winning more awards recently, but does this actually guarantee success or increase their impact? How can we support emerging filmmakers and diverse voices in telling creative stories that push boundaries? And what is a creative documentary anyway?
