With the six documentary films in this year’s retrospective we are not only celebrating the work of African documentarians, but we also want to take a moment to look back and reflect:
on the fundament of ten years of DOK.network Africa, ten years of exchange with film professionals and films from and about Africa, we will discuss what the future should bring for filmmakers, audiences and festivals on the continent and abroad. During the panel discussion "Honouring the past to inspire the future", DOK.network Africa director Barbara Off exchanged views with festival directors Mandisa Zitha (ENCOUNTERS) and Mohamed Saïd Ouma (Documentary Africa) as well as with director Férid Boughedir (film CAMÉRA D'AFRIQUE) and up-and-coming filmmaker Cyrielle Raingou (film LE SPECTRE DE BOKO HARAM).

More about the Panelists
Férid Boughedir is a renowned Tunisian film critic, director, and professor at Tunis University. He began his career as a respected film critic in Africa and the Arab world. Boughedir has served on the juries of several prestigious film festivals, including Cannes, and was also the Vice-President and Director of the Carthage Film Festival, where he founded the FPCA project. The Middle East Magazine listed Boughedir among the "50 most influential personalities" in the Arab World in 2016. His two full-length documentaries, "Caméra d'Afrique" and "Camra Arabe," were selected at Cannes and have become reference work for the younger generation.
Cyrielle Raingou is a Cameroonian filmmaker and holds a master’s degrees in law and in documentary film directing. She is passionate about African cultural identity, its promotion on an international scale and the economic interest it raises. She very often uses metaphors and the symbolism of animals to unearth the complexity and mystery within human. She just completed her first feature length documentary LE SPECTRE DE BOKO HARAM, focused on the life in a war zone from children perspective, that will be shown at the DOK.fest München 2023.
Mohamed Saïd Ouma is an experienced filmmaker, an avid cultural operator and a seasoned festival manager who currently serves as the Executive Director of Documentary Africa. He has cut his professional teeth as a festival manager for the International Film Festival of Africa and the Islands (FIFAI) from 2004 to 2015 where he managed to coordinate support for the festival from the Municipality of Le Port- Reunion Islands and the national film governing body (CNC). He is among others known for his film RED CARD. He has also been a curator for this year's DOK.network retrospective.
Mandisa Zitha completed her BA in Film and Media Studies, majoring in Documentary. She is an ambassador for the SA film industry, was one of the Mail and Guardian’s 2011 Top 100 Women for the Arts and Culture Sector and spoke at various international Documentary Film Festivals (e.g. IDFA, Thessaloniki). In 2020 she received the 2020 Mbokodo Award for “Women in Media”. In her current role as festival director, Zitha is building worldwide partnerships for the Encounters festival and is committed to the development of emerging talent in the documentary industry. She has also been a curator for this year's DOK.network retrospective.
