Budget, Editing Time, Quality – BFS Survey Presentation on Long Unformatted Documentary Film

The Federal Association of Film Editors (Bundesverband Filmschnitt Editor e.V. BFS) commissioned a survey on working conditions in the editing of documentary films. The participating editors provided information on 246 films. The results of the survey will be presented and discussed with guests from the industry.

Jide Tom Akinleminu
Filmmaker (Film Five GmbH)

Jide Tom Akinleminu is a Danish/Nigerian filmmaker, trained at the German Filmschool DFFB. Currently based in Berlin, he works within the fields of documentary, fiction, fashion and art. As a cinematographer, he shot several award winning films, such as the shortfilm “Kokon (Cocoon)”, which was acclaimed for its unique visual style and was awarded with Germany´s most prestigious film award, the Golden Lola, in 2010. His first feature-length documentary “Portrait of a lone farmer” won international recognition at several festivals and received the “African Movie Academy Award” in 2014 as well as the German 3Sat Award for “Best Documentary”.

Beatrice Babin
Professorin Lehrstuhl Montage (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München)

Editor (in Berlin and Munich) + Chair for Studies in Philosophy and cinema, at Munich (Germany), with a degree thesis about Federico Fellini: the clown as a shape at the border between life and death. She lived many years in New York and in Africa, and is an editor since 2000. She has worked with Emily Atef, Volker Koepp, Micah Magee, Wael Shawky, Michael Klette, Cordula Kablitz, Wim Wenders, Markus Imhoof, and many others, who helped her to develop her sensibility. She is member of the German Film Academy and of the BFS (German Editors Association). Since 2020 Chair: Film Editing, HFF Munich.

Katharina Bergfeld
Producer / documentaries and hybrids (Flare Film)

Since 2015, Katharina Bergfeld produces documentaries at Berlin-based production company Flare Film. Founded in 2008 by Martin Heisler, the company produces fiction and documentary films for cinema and TV, and since 2020, with Flare Entertainment, also fictional series. Katharina's recent documentaries include the festival hit WALCHENSEE FOREVER by Janna Ji Wonders (2020, Berlinale Perspektive Award, EFA selection, Bavarian Film Award, et al. ), the children's film GLITTER & DUST by Anna Koch & Julia Lemke (2020, Max Ophüls Award, Best Cinematography achtung Berlin, Goldener Spatz, et al.), DEFENDER OF THE FAITH by Christoph Röhl (2019, dok.fest Munich), BERLIN BOUNCER by David Dietl (2019, Berlinale) and FAMILIY SHOTS by David Sieveking (2018, DOK.Leipzig, CPH:Dox). > flare-film.com

Carlotta Kittel
Filmeditorin, Filmemacherin (Freelancer)

Carlotta Kittel works as a freelance film editor, filmmaker and editing lecturer in Berlin, Germany. She edits documentary and fiction films for cinema and TV. As a director her work focusses on interview-based documentaries. Kittel teaches as a guest lecturer at several German filmschools, like the dffb, the Film University Babelsberg and the University Hildesheim (Institute for Media, Theatre and Popular Culture). She was a jury member at the achtung berlin film festival (documentary competition 2019), at the Berlinale (Perspektive Deutsches Kino 2022) and at the German Kamerapreis (Cinema Documentary 2023). Since 2020, Kittel has served as a board member for the German Editors' Association (BFS). She is also a member of the AG DOK documentary association, the ProQuote Film association and the German Film Academy.

Dietmar Kraus
Filmeditor, Kurator, Vorstand BFS (Bundesverband Filmschnitt Editor e.V. )

Born in Bavaria, Dietmar Kraus grew up in South Africa before returning to Germany at age 19. He studied editing at the film school in Babelsberg, and predominately works on cinema films, both fiction and documentary. He has taught as a guest professor in Babelsberg, and as a tutor in Myanmar and Ruanda. Since 2016, he is a board member of the German film editors association BFS. In 2017 he also became a curator at the editing-focused film festival „Edimotion“ in Cologne.

Carina Mergens

Born 1977 in Trier.? 1997 - 2000 Professional training in Media Arts. ?2001- 2002 Professional Training "Film Editing" at ifs international film school cologne. 2007 - 2008 Postgrad Diploma „Documentary Filmmaking“ at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Australia.? 2015 Award for best editing of a feature length documentary for „Am Kölnberg“. Maja Tennstedt
Filmeditor

Maja Tennstedt is a Berlin based editor. After a three-year training in film and video editing and several internships and jobs as assisting editor, Maja studied editing at the University for Film and Television „Konrad Wolf“ in Potsdam-Babelsberg and obtained her diploma in 2013. Since then she has edited numerous feature-length documentaries and fiction films.

Erik Winker
Produzent und Geschäftsführer (CORSO Film)

Erik Winker has been working in the field of documentary for over 15 years. In 2008 he was a co-founder of the production company HUPE Film which is now running under the name CORSO Film with offices in Cologne and Stuttgart. The productions of the company are running on festivals, on TV and in cinema worldwide and have been awarded numerous times. Erik Winker holds teaching assignments at the University Of Applied Sciences Mainz and the ifs Cologne. He is working as a tutor for workshops like Dok.Incubator, Ex Oriente and Documentary Campus and is a regular member in festival and funding juries. He´s a former chairman of the regional filmmaker´s association Filmbüro NW, a member of the German Film Academy and a founding member of the Documentary Association of Europe. In 2021 he´s a stand-in professor for documentary at the University Of Applied Sciences Mainz.
