WASTE LAND
UK/BRA 2010 – Director: Lucy Walker – Original language: English, Portuguese – Subtitles: English – Length: 99 min.
One single can is of great importance. Because 99 is not 100, and that single one will make the difference._On the outskirts of Rio de Janiero lies the biggest rubbish dump in the world. Its rubbish pickers, known as ‘catadores,’ scramble over mountains of waste in search of reusable materials. Viz Muniz selected this place for his latest art project. In the middle of the landfill site he recreates classic works of art with the catadores, fashioning the motifs from materials that are to be found there. Yet it is not only junk that is transformed into art before our eyes; the rubbish collectors also experience profound changes through the process of working together. An uplifting documentary about community, humanity and the value of rubbish.
