“It was immediately clear to me: I didn’t want to turn it into a voyeuristic snuff movie.” Herzog discovered by chance the film footage of the animal rights campaigner, Timothy Treadwell, and used it to compile his award-winning portrait, GRIZZLY MAN. The found images document the absurdity that someone who wanted to protect the bears, of all people, was eaten by them. Herzog tells how Treadwell unintentionally filmed the fatal attack - though the cover was on the lens of his camera so it is only possible to hear what happened. For this reason Herzog wears headphones when he listens to the recording of Treadwell’s death. The audience doesn’t hear any of the sound but can easily imagine they have heard everything. Great!
