LA CASA DE MI ABUELA
E 2005 – Director: Adán Aliaga – Original language: Spanish – Subtitles: English – Length: 80 min.
Once upon a time there was a grandmother who was taking care of her six-year old granddaughter while the child’s parents were at work. Impulsive and headstrong six-year old Marina rebelled against the strictness of her grandmother, 75-year-old Marita who expected her to conform to the rituals of her conservative and religious life in a dull industrial town. Marina’s naïve and candid desire of freedom clashes with grandmother Marita’s old-fashioned education. The tensions between the two escalate as the grandmother’s worries and despair grow bigger: the little house in which she has lived for 52 years is to be torn down to make way for modern apartment buildings.
Adán Aliaga draws a very intimate, playful and tender portrait of the ambiguous relationship between his grandmother and his young cousin Marina. But My Grandmother’s House is also a universal story about family and generational change, a beautiful poetic tale about the eternal conflict between old and new, told from the perspective of little Marina.
“I knew right from the beginning that I didn´t want to do a documentary, rather a film that would leave no one untouched because what this movie really talks about is the generational change. It´s about the end of an antiquated way of life and the powerful energy with which modern times advance and take over (…) Everyone has or had a grandmother and like someone once said to me, she´s like everyone´s grandmother.” Adán Aliaga
“Full of surprising visual treats, it is replete with metaphor, but never loses sight of a sometimes tragic reality. It is a film about memory, loss and love. And we loved it.”
