LUANDA, FACTORY OF MUSIC (LUANDA, A FABRICA DA MUSICA)
Angola, Portugal 2009 – Director: Kiluanje Liberdade – Co-Director: Inês Gonçalves – Original language: Portuguese – Subtitles: English – Length: 54 min.
The kids of Angola’s capital city, Luanda, stand in line outside DJ Buda’s studio to get the chance to let out all their anger and frustration by screaming into a microphone. An old computer, a couple of small loudspeakers and a large microphone are the sum of the busy music producer’s assets. In the 90s he mixed simplistic rap with classic African beats and a new musical style, Kuduru, was born. Outside the studio the people discuss the living conditions in this deeply afflicted country and the prospect of an undefined future. This is a fresh and important film that documents how the young Angolan culture is oriented towards the West and at the same time highlights what is unique about their identity.
