ABENDLAND
Austria 2011 – Director: Nikolaus Geyrhalter – Original language: Czech, English, German, Italian, Slovak, Spanish – Subtitles: English – Length: 90 min.
It is night time in Europe. Refugees wait at a border in the Balkans. People protest against the transport of nuclear waste. In a premature baby unit a newborn is being fed. We see drunken revellers at Munich Oktoberfest, assembly-line workers, evensong in Rome. These diverse scenes, which come from the most varied corners of Europe and include all walks of life, are woven together by Geyrhalter into an associative journey through the West. Birth and death, loud and quiet, holding back and pushing forward – by night the course of life reveals itself in all its glory. In his inimitable style Geyrhalter links tacit impressions together in a visual parade and the political naturally reveals itself. Dunja Bialas
