Symposium: Promoting diversity in young film talent
„Dreh’s Um“ – Film workshops from migrant communities as an example of best practice
DOK.education invites documentary filmmakers, those involved in cultural education in the field of film, social pedagogues and funding institutions to a symposium.
The symposium will present the award-winning model project "Dreh's Um", which aims to promote diverse perspectives in the emerging film industry. The project managers will provide an insight into the opportunities and possibilities arising from these projects and report on their experiences of working with non-professionals and people with migrant roots. A panel of experts open to the professional audience will enable attendees to engage in dialogue.
„Dreh’s Um“ is the exemplary film education concept of a Berlin collective that brings together teenagers and young adults with German roots to deal with their migrant identity and family history. In concrete steps, they are introduced to all stages of production and professionally accompanied. The result is enchanting, very personal short films from the second and third generation migrant community that find their way into the general public. "On the one hand, it's about making films and, on the other, about empowering yourself with your own perspective, taking the camera into your own hands and figuratively pointing it at yourself – away from the white, often stereotypical view of our community." says Dreh's Um initiator Duc Ngo Ngoc.
DOK.education presents this model proposal for promoting diverse perspectives in the emerging film industry and enables interested film teachers, social and media educators to get in touch with the initiators – with the vision of establishing similar workshops in Munich.
In the second part, the AG DOK-Speeddating offers a guided framework for the exchange of experiences and active networking in the audience. The gathering of professionals at DOK.fest München is intended as a starting signal for the sustainable development of comparable film education projects that enable more diverse access to the film industry. This is realised in concrete terms in the networking of the audience on site with the guided speed dating of the AG DOK working group: Interested people from the film industry, social educators and representatives of financing institutions come into contact with each other. Organised and led by initiator Morgane Remter, a networking structure is created that is made available to all participants after the event.
