CARPATIA
Deutschland / Österreich 2004 – Director: Andrzej Klamt und Ulrich Rydzewski – Original language: diverse osteuropäische Sprachen – Subtitles: German – Length: 127 min.
Carpatia takes you on a poetic journey of time through the rural mountainous regions of Europe. It starts out east of Vienna, and continues to Slovakia, Poland, the Ukraine and Romania, stopping in places and regions that not only geographically lay 'just outside of Europe'. They may seem completely foreign to us, but nonetheless allow us to connect with common cultural and historical roots.
We visit farmers, shepherds and magicians, rafters, gold-diggers and gypsies. People who appear to be living the life of past centuries tell about their daily life. Fascinating landscape photography, surprising details and a subtle soundtrack give this film a magical flavour.
Carpatia is a portrait of many different people who have one thing in common: an uncertain future as their countries prepare to join the European Union.
