IN FILM NIST
Iran 2011 – Director: Jafar Panahi, Mojtaba Mirtahmasb – Original language: Farsi – Subtitles: English – Length: 75 min.
A film that is not allowed to be a film! In 2010 Jafar Panahi was given a six-year jail sentence and a 20-year ban on practicing his profession due to his alleged propaganda and crimes against national security. The appeals process is pending and so he is condemned to wait. His collaborator and friend, MojtabaMirtahmasb, documents a day of Panahi’s house arrest just before the Iranian New Year celebrations. This claustrophobic chamber play in Panahi’s Teheran apartment, set on a carpet with an iguana as a performer, becomes a lesson in Iranian cinema and the powerfully subversive art of filmmaking. And alongside this, it touches on essential questions about film, life and reality: “If you can recount a film, then why shouldn’t you also shoot it?” Silvia Bauer
