With Facebook’s purchase of the Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles for $2 billion dollars, interest in virtual reality has skyrocketed. Now money is pouring into hardware and software development, with players like Sony, Samsung and Zeiss all getting into the goggle business and building content distribution platforms. While most pundits have focused on thegaming and entertainment industries as the most likely to utilize the new technologies, in fact, documentary, news and nonfiction storytellers can take advantage of the power of virtual reality to craft powerful and important pieces with visceral impact.

But being part of the VR revolution means a change in the way storytellers approach and produce their content. So what are the golden rules of making VR content?

At Virtual Reality Storytelling - From Screen to Beam, we will spend the day considering the ins and outs of creating on virtual reality platforms. We will carefully review the advantages and disadvantages of 360 video versus computer-generated content and how the two might merge. We will hear talks from experts in the field, check out the different headsets from an Oculus Rift DK2 to the Samsung GearVR to Google Cardboard, and discuss the joys and pitfalls about developing for the different platforms. This industry day will give you a good overview of the tools and techniques of this emerging medium and inspire you to make your own virtual reality stories.
